10 Fun Ways to Keep Learning This Summer with LVA
Summer is the perfect time to relax, recharge, and make memories—but learning doesn’t have to stop when school is out! At Legends Virtual Academy, we believe some of the best learning happens through creativity, exploration, and family time. Here are 10 fun ways to keep your child engaged while enjoying the rest of summer.
1. Visit Your Local Library
Many libraries offer free summer reading programs, hands-on activities, and family events. Take a trip to your local library and let your student pick out a book about phoenixes, Alabama legends, or local history. You never know what exciting story might inspire your next adventure!
2. Explore Nature
Head outside and enjoy Alabama’s beautiful outdoors! Take a walk, visit a park, or explore your backyard. Build a simple birdhouse or bird feeder, then spend time watching the different birds that visit your yard. Keep a list or draw pictures of everything you discover.
3. Cook Together
Cooking is a great way to practice reading, math, and science. Measuring ingredients, following directions, and experimenting with recipes all build valuable skills. Bring a little LVA spirit into your kitchen with a fun Phoenix Snack Pack!
You’ll need:
1 single servicing bag of chips
Cooked ground beef or black beans
Shredded lettuce
Diced tomatoes
Shredded cheese

4. Build Something Amazing
Whether you’re building with LEGO® bricks, cardboard, craft supplies, or Minecraft Education, let your imagination soar! Building encourages creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving.
Don’t forget to check out the K12 Minecraft “School Outside the Box” Challenge for a chance to showcase your creativity.
5. Take Strider on Your Everyday Trips and Learning Adventures
A trip to the grocery store, zoo, museum, or even the post office can become an opportunity to practice math, reading, observation, and communication skills.

6. Start a Creativity Journal
Draw pictures, write stories, create comics, or keep a journal of your favorite summer memories.
Your creations might even inspire an entry into this year’s K12 National Writing or Art Competition!
7. Learn a New Life Skill
Summer is a great time to practice real-world skills!
Try cooking a new recipe, planting flowers, creating a family budget for a shopping trip, organizing your room, or learning a new hobby. Count change, compare prices, estimate travel time, measure ingredients, or keep score during family games. Every new skill helps build confidence for the future.
8. Encourage Creativity
Throughout the school year, K12 offers exciting national competitions in areas like:
Art
Photography
Writing
Minecraft
Video creation
STEM
Painting, photography, music, storytelling, and crafting all help students express themselves while developing important creative skills. Keep an eye on our social media pages—you never know which competition might be the perfect fit for your student!
9. Stay Connected
Keep an eye on our social media pages and LC Community for events, national competitions, family resources, and school updates throughout the summer.
10. Make Memories Together
Some of the best learning happens through conversation, shared experiences, and time spent together. Whether you’re taking a family walk, enjoying a movie night, visiting grandparents, or simply playing a board game together, every shared experience helps children grow.
Enjoy the rest of your summer, make wonderful memories, and know that we can’t wait to welcome you back for another amazing school year!
See you on August 12!
