4th grade science volcano experiment baking soda vinegar
What happens when you give 4th graders baking soda, vinegar, and a challenge?
You get volcanoes… and a whole lot of excitement.
In Mrs. Peterson-Sims’ 4th grade class, students didn’t just learn about science—they experienced it. From the moment materials were gathered, you could feel the anticipation building.
Each student created their own volcano using simple household items. Cups, bottles, and clay quickly turned into mini mountains ready to erupt.
And then came the big moment.

The Countdown to “Lava”
Before anything exploded, students made predictions.
Would it bubble fast? Overflow slowly? Make a mess? (Spoiler: yes)
Then came the pour.
As soon as the vinegar hit the baking soda, the reactions began. Bright, colorful “lava” bubbled up and spilled over the sides.
Some eruptions were quick and powerful. Others slowly crept over the edges. Every single one was met with excitement, laughter, and wide eyes.
This wasn’t just a science lesson. It was discovery in real time.
More Than Just a Fun Experiment
Behind all the excitement, real learning was happening.
Students observed chemical reactions, recorded results, and compared outcomes. They learned how small changes can affect results.
But even more important? They built confidence.
They made predictions. Tested ideas. Saw results. And realized they are capable of figuring things out.
We were especially excited to receive permission to share some of these moments. Seeing their pride says everything.
